On August 20, 2011, tropical depression #9 became Tropical Storm Irene just off the Northeast coast of Barbados. It remained a tropical storm with 50 - 70 mph winds until August 22, 2011, when she became a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of up to 90 mph. During the early hours of August 24, 2011, Irene became a category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 120 mph. This system skirted the north shores of Puerto Rico, Haiti and Cuba before turning to a more
north track, barely missing Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
During it's track north, Irene lost some of her strength and was downgraded to a category 1 hurricane with 80 - 85 mph winds before slamming into North Carolina's Coast near Cape Lookout around 8:00 AM on August 27, 2011. The video was shot in the small town of Scotland Neck, NC, approximately 100 miles inland. Reports of near hurricane force winds were rumoured in the area, but it is more likely that we only received gusts up to 60 mph.
The storm left NC and headed for the upper Mid-Atlantic States and New England and finally on through Canada where it eventually dissipated.
