Jefferson National Forest Trip Report
My daughter, April & I spent 3 days in the Jefferson National Forest in central Virginia last weekend. We did the Cornelius Creek / Apple Orchard Falls loop and threw in a side trip to Apple Orchard Mountain @ 4,225 ft.
above sea level. Although the falls were not flowing due to minor drought like conditions, it was still an awesome 200' waterfall considering the region. The amazing feature of Apple Orchard Mountain is not the fact that the Appalachian Trail crosses this open grassy bald, or that this mountain has the most

prominence than any other mountain in Virginia at 2,835 ft., but the fact there is an FAA radar sight located on the summit. I don't think we could have asked for any better weather than what we encountered those 3 days. The highs during the day only got up to the upper 60's while the nights were very mild and comfortable with Saturday night getting down in the low 40's. We hit the leaf season a little too early but I had counted on that. I had initially planned to make this trip during the last weekend in this month but another engagement came up causing us to switch plans for an earlier weekend.
All in all, we manged a little fall color, good company and some awesome food.
